Description

Jizo is seen by Zen Buddhists as a guardian of women, children and travelers. Jizo embodies the qualities of courage, unflagging optimism, and benevolence, and the bodhisattva vow to free all beings from suffering.
Gassho is the Japanese word for the gesture Jizo is making by placing the palms together with fingers pointing upward. This gesture is used to express greeting, request, thankfulness, deep respect, or prayer. It is also known as namasté (Sanskrit), heshi (Chinese), and wai (Thai).
About this design: I designed these statues during my period of study at Great Vow Zen Monastery in Clatskanie, Oregon. This design is intended to evoke a feeling of calm and reverence. The statues can be used as altar figures or garden ornaments, and they’re pleasant to hold in your hand. Currently there are two available sizes and two color varieties: ebony porcelain, and white ceramic with celadon green glaze. Each one is made by hand in Oregon.
